Putting It All Together
The goal was that each person had a properly working horn scope, LNA, Hydrogen detecting GNU Radio software package, and ATTITUDE to be ready to take to Green Bank. And don't forget, a lesson plan for the Summer Institute students.
...I still have more to say (Don't I always!) But I am just trying to start this entry by getting the pictures out there. Today is Friday, and our goal is to clean up WVU work area, and pack up telescopes, equipment, and personal stuff to move on to Green Bank...So enjoy the Pics...
Before I get yelled at...Part of the calibration of the scope is to point it down and take a reading were there is no hydrogen. This is part of the process to isolate the hydrogen in the signal.
One Last Thing Before We Go...
Okay. Maybe I will let the pictures tell the story. We Built, We Saw, We Passed...The Morgantown Round. Everyone was successful in having a working scope and GNU program. Since Old John had put so much effort into improving the method of gathering data, we all used his modified version of the program to compare our tests. We are good to go to Green Bank and try some science.
The one last thing I contributed was a method to point the scope. Many phones have a sky app such as Sky Safari that we used. It allows you to look at the sky and tell what's there. It involved holding your phone "up" between the thing you are looking at, and your head. So, what is the horn pointing at. A simple 90 degree double reflector is all that was needed. The first is a prototype, but it seems to work.
The idea is that the phone and scope must prove alignment. The double right mirror will let the viewer see what is being pointed at. Early testing seems to have worked. Next is making them.
Our Morgantown/ WVU experience is over, and now onto Green Bank! Just one last looks at a few words from Pranav...
